SCBI is a research facility in rural Virginia, closed to the public. This is where the Smithsonian houses the animals they are hoping to breed and those that are too sensitive to do well at a public zoo. We have Black-Footed Ferrets, Maned Wolves, Persian Onagers, Przewalski’s Horses, Dama Gazelles, Scimitar-Horned Oryxes, Cheetahs, Clouded Leopards, Red Pandas and many more. I live on-campus here along with other interns, PhD students, and resident scientists. A lot of different research projects are going on here, from GIS to gametes and endocrinology, all of it interesting.
